Toyota CHR Hybrid Review 2024

Is the new Toyota C-HR hybrid the best SUV out there? It's got a cool new look, comes in both plug-in and regular hybrid versions, has more tech stuff than before, and is roomier inside. In this review we aim to answer this question and more in our detailed review.

Our experts have thoroughly evaluated the new Toyota C-HR hybrid inside and out, examining its hybrid powertrain, driving quality, updated styling, enhanced interior, practicality and various other features. This comprehensive assessment will help determine whether the C-HR lives up to the expectations and hype surrounding it.

The Final Verdict

Toyota has excelled with the new 2024 C-HR, focusing on design and driving experience. While emphasising these aspects, it retains Toyota's core strengths: reliability, practicality for small families, and efficiency.

About the New Toyota C-HR Hybrid 2024

The 2024 C-HR blends concept car-like looks with advanced tech while keeping the best features of its predecessor. Its futuristic appearance includes flush door handles, LED headlights with built-in indicators, and an illuminated C-HR logo on the rear lights. This improved design positions it as a more style-focused option in the compact SUV market.

The C-HR comes in four main grades: Icon, Design, Excel and GR Sport, plus a limited-edition premium variant. It offers three powertrain options: 1.8L hybrid (138 hp) , 2.0L hybrid (193 hp) , and 2.0L plug-in hybrid (up to 41 miles electric range)

All versions use Toyota's 5th generation hybrid technology.

What is this Toyota' 5th generation hybrid technology?

Toyota's 5th generation hybrid technology, first seen in the 2023 Corolla Cross, offers a better mix of efficiency, performance and safety.

It features a more compact motor generator and a lighter hybrid battery, delivering higher power output with improved fuel efficiency. Unlike older hybrids, this new system excels in both city and highway driving, delivering better performance without sacrificing efficiency.

It also includes improved safety features like enhanced adaptive cruise control and better lane trace assist. These updates set a new benchmark for hybrid vehicles, making them more versatile and appealing to a wider range of drivers.

The Interior Design Features

A good balance between style and functionality

The C-HR's interior blends function and style perfectly. While still minimalist like earlier models, it's cleverly designed to include all necessary features. Premium touches set it apart from typical compact SUVs, offering a more upscale feel without sacrificing practicality.

Do C-HR utilise the space well?

The C-HR makes good use of its compact exterior, with interior dimensions of 1,690mm length, 1,465mm width, and 1,210mm height.

While the sloping roofline slightly reduces rear cargo space, it can still comfortably fit three adults with reasonable luggage.

Compared to larger SUVs like the Tiguan or Formentor, it's smaller but still practical. The new model improves on the previous C-HR's rear space, addressing a common criticism. An optional panoramic glass roof adds 30mm of headroom, enhancing interior comfort.

The material and the build quality of the C-HR?

The C-HR's interior blends premium feel with practicality. Higher trims feature soft suede-effect trim, giving a luxury SUV feel. Hard plastics are used strategically, fitting the minimalist design rather than suggesting cost-cutting.

The front interior boasts high-quality materials and soft-touch surfaces, while the rear uses more hard plastics that suit the vehicle's style.

The climate control switches stand out for their premium look and feel.

Notably, the new C-HR uses twice the recycled materials of its predecessor without compromising quality or durability.

It also introduces an vegan leather alternative for the steering wheel cover.

What about the tech in the interior?

Toyota offers two infotainment options for the C-HR: Toyota Smart Connect with an 8.0-inch display for the base Icon model, and Toyota Smart Connect+ with a 12.3-inch touchscreen for all other variants.

While the system's quality is subjective, our experts found the touchscreen responsive and reliable, with no glitches even under heavy use.

Key tech features include 64-colour ambient lighting for personalisation, the MyT app for remote vehicle control, a power back door, and a wireless charging pad. These additions enhance the C-HR's everyday usability and meet growing expectations for connected car features.

Toyota C-HR interior FAQs

The CHR offers a variety of storage options throughout the interior which includes door pockets, glove compartment, cupholders, cargo area and centre console.

There are three main colour schemes for the C-HR interior: Dark Grey, Black/Blue, and Black/Brown. These options depend on the specification and grade chosen,

The Exterior Design Features - Best in the Class?

Has Toyota totally nailed it?

Toyota has indeed broken free from its "reliable but boring" image with the new C-HR. This SUV boasts a striking street presence, standing out from typical designs. It creates a strong visual statement without resorting to cookie-cutter styling, successfully blending uniqueness with broad appeal.

What about the headlights?

The C-HR's C-shaped headlights are a standout feature, giving the SUV a futuristic, concept car look rarely seen in budget-friendly models.

The illuminated logo adds a touch of luxury, making even everyday trips feel special. These design elements elevate the C-HR above typical SUVs in its class, offering a premium feel without the premium price tag.

"The adaptive headlights on the CHR are absolutely brilliant - you've got to experience them to believe it. They're like having your own personal lighting crew, adjusting on the fly to give you the best view of the road ahead"

Is everything sunshine and rainbows?

While Toyota has excelled with the C-HR's exterior, our experts struggled to find significant flaws.

The chunky rear pillars, though stylish, might challenge some drivers during parallel parking or when reversing from tight spots.

Experienced drivers shouldn't find this problematic, and the parking sensors provide valuable assistance.

toyota CHR exterior

The wheel options?

The C-HR offers various wheel sizes, with the base variant featuring 17-inch alloys, upgradable to 19-inch. High-spec 2.0 HEV and 2.0 PHEV models come with up to 20-inch alloys.

Choosing depends on personal preference. The 18-inch wheels offer the best balance of style and comfort. For a sportier look, especially on 2.0 models, the 20-inch wheels fill out the arches impressively. However, they make the ride firmer and increase road noise.

If you prioritise looks over comfort, the 20-inch  are ideal. For a more balanced experience, the 18-inch option is recommended.

It is just the looks or Is it Aerodynamical?

Toyota's designers have blended form and function in the C-HR's design. The coupe-like roofline isn't just stylish; it reduces drag by improving airflow over the vehicle.

This clever approach enhances aerodynamics while maintaining the high-riding position SUV buyers prefer.

The C-shaped headlights and front design also serve an aerodynamic purpose. They guide airflow around the wheels and along the vehicle's sides, reducing turbulence and drag.

This thoughtful design demonstrates Toyota's commitment to combining aesthetics with practical engineering in the C-HR.

"The Toyota C-HR is designed to move smoothly through the air. Its shape, with a sloping roof and sharp edges, helps it cut through wind easily. This smart design makes the car use less fuel and stay steady on the highway, even when going fast."

The Driving and Performance

The comfort and the ride quality?

The C-HR provides a comfortable ride, especially in urban settings. Cabin noise is minimal, posing no significant concern.

Its supple suspension effectively absorbs potholes and speed bumps, preventing harsh impacts from reaching the interior.

This setup is ideal for city driving and daily commutes, offering a smooth and refined experience.

The handling and agility - best in the class?

The C-HR impresses as a compact SUV with its surprising agility. It handles corners with minimal body roll and feels nimble, particularly in urban environments. The light steering enhances manoeuvrability in tight spaces, making it well-suited for city driving.

Hybrid Technology and impact on driving experience

Both self-charging and plug-in hybrid options in the C-HR enhance the driving experience. The self-charging hybrid excels in city driving, often running on electric power alone, providing smooth and quiet operation.

The plug-in hybrid offers up to 41 miles of electric-only range, ideal for most daily commutes.

Fuel economy is a strong point, with the 1.8-litre hybrid achieving around 60 mpg in real-world conditions.

Acceleration is impressive for a hybrid, particularly in the 2.0-litre version, which offers more responsive performance.

These hybrid systems positively impact the driving experience by combining efficiency with smooth power delivery, making the C-HR well-suited for both urban and longer journeys.

The Driving modes and their impact

The C-HR hybrid offers four driving modes: Normal, EV, Eco, and Power. Normal mode automatically manages the most efficient use of both engine and battery.

The car resets to this default mode at each start, not remembering previous settings.

While resetting might seem annoying, it offers benefits in terms of safety, flexibility, energy efficiency, and intentional driving.

This feature ensures drivers are aware of their current mode, allows selection based on immediate needs, encourages optimal efficiency, and prompts consideration of driving style.

Despite the minor inconvenience of resetting, this approach promotes more mindful and efficient driving.

toyota chr driving modes

How good is it on highways?

The C-HR performs well on highways, offering a stable and comfortable ride. Its aerodynamic design helps reduce wind noise, contributing to a quieter cabin at higher speeds. The hybrid powertrains provide sufficient power for overtaking and maintaining cruising speeds.

On longer journeys, the C-HR's comfortable seats and well-tuned suspension help reduce driver fatigue. The 2.0-litre hybrid option offers more responsive acceleration, beneficial for motorway driving. While not designed as a long-distance cruiser, the C-HR holds its own on highways, balancing comfort with efficiency.

The adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist features enhance the highway driving experience, adding convenience and safety for longer trips.

Practicality

The 2024 C-HR balances style and driving dynamics with practicality, offering a good all-round package for a compact SUV. It provides generous front legroom and adequate rear space. Taller drivers will find it comfortable with a good driving position.

Despite the sloping roofline, headroom is sufficient for most passengers. The rear can comfortably accommodate three people, impressive for its class. Contrary to common belief, the sloping roofline and thick rear pillars don't significantly limit visibility.

The C-HR is best suited for individuals or small families who prioritise aesthetics and driving experience over maximum space efficiency. While not class-leading in practicality, it offers a compelling compromise between style and functionality.

"The Toyota C-HR offers cosy seating for four adults, making it perfect for small families or groups of friends."

The boot and the cargo space

The C-HR's boot space is reasonable for a small SUV, though not class-leading:377 litres with rear seats up and 1,160 litres with rear seats folded

The stylish sloping roofline slightly restricts vertical space, but it's not overly inconvenient. Compared to other compact SUVs, there's a slight compromise on cargo capacity.

Overall, the boot is functional for everyday use and can accommodate larger items when needed. However, it's not the most spacious in its class, reflecting the C-HR's focus on style over maximum practicality.

The Towing Capacity

The C-HR's towing capacity is consistent across all models at 725kg. This reflects its focus on driving experience and style rather than off-road or heavy-duty capabilities.

While adequate for light towing tasks, this capacity isn't particularly high. It's fair for its class but may not suit those with more demanding towing needs. For more aggressive towing requirements, alternatives like the Tiguan might be more suitable.

The C-HR's towing ability aligns with its urban-oriented design, catering to occasional light towing rather than regular, heavy-duty use.

The Hybrid Technology

The CHR hybrid uses the Toyota 5th generation hybrid technology which provides more efficiency, performance, enhanced driving experience and advanced safety features.

Comparison with Honda Insight

Honda like Toyota also offers advanced hybrid technology : Honda insight. It also offers excellent fuel economy as Toyota. Based on the real world scenarios the Toyota reported to slightly outperform Honda insights figures.

Toyota takes the lead in driving experience as the experts say that Toyota’s recalibrated throttle response is providing a more engaging driving experience compared to the Honda insights figures.

Comparison with Hyundai Ioniq

Both Hyundai and Toyota excels in boasting advanced technology and safety features comparable to Toyota. Though, Toyota's integration and synergy of safety systems appears to be more refined when compares with Toyota.

Comparison with the Ford Escape Hybrid

The other comparison that can be made is with Ford Escape Hybrid technology. Both vehicles offers a comfortable ride and have good noise insulation at high speeds.

With new technology, Toyota, powertrain is more compact and have lighter powertrain which provides better efficiency and performance balance, while Ford Focus is more catered towards a more raw power and utility.

The Resale and Depreciation Value

Hybrid vehicle resale often faces concerns over battery life and replacement costs. However, Toyota's reputation for reliability and the C-HR's overall value contribute to its low depreciation and high resale value.

Research from Motorway says that Toyota C-HR models depreciate only 14 percent in the first three years when new. While this data is based on older models, it likely applies to the new version as well.

Toyota's extendable warranty, covering up to 10 years or 100,000 miles, further enhances the    C-HR's long-term value. Described as "the best warranty of any car manufacturer in the UK", this significantly impacts the vehicle's resale value, making it an attractive option for buyers concerned about long-term costs.

The insurance Cost

Toyota CHR 2024 insurance groups range from 20-26 based on the trim levels. The 1.8 trims belong to insurance group 20, while the 2.0 trim levels belong to 26. The insurance cost is relatively competitive Compared to other compact SUVs in the market.

I'm so happy with my new car!

"The whole ordering and delivery process with Motorfinity was easy and simple, the delivery was on time and the driver who delivered the car was very patient and showed us how to use the new Toyota C-HR HEV CVT, which, by the way, is a high-tech piece of work for a person in his 60's.

I have been in contact with Chris and Fiona who kept me informed of the process. I also got lucky with the Blue Light Card which gave me a big discount.

I recommend Motorfinity to anyone looking to buy a new car."
