About Cupra Formentor

The Cupra Formentor is a performance-driven crossover SUV crafted by Cupra, SEAT's dedicated performance subsidiary. The Formentor stands out as Cupra's inaugural independent model, blending the advantages of an SUV with the agility of a compact hatchback.

Before 2018, Cupra was SEAT's label for sporty cars, similar to BMW's 'M' badge for their high-performance vehicles. However, in 2018, SEAT transitioned Cupra into a distinct brand to spotlight performance-centric models.

Cupra 2024:

In the second half of the 2024, the Cupra Formentor is expected to have a major facelift. This is the first styling after the launched of this successful SUV from the Cupra in 2020.

There are going to be major changes in both the exterior and interior of the vehicle. The headlights will be updated to align more closely with other Cupra SUVs. Mechanically, the 1.5-litre engine is likely to remain the same, while the 2.0-litre variant is expected to be more performance-oriented, aiming to appeal to lovers of high-performance SUVs.

The e-HYBRID Insights

Like its rivals, the Cupra Formentor has a hybrid option in its line-up. This e-hybrid pairs a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine with an electric motor, offering two power choices: 204hp or 245hp. The version highlighted in the related video boasts 204hp

The Cupra Formentor offers five distinct models: V1, V2, VZ1, VZ2, and VZ3, with variations in engine and specifications. V1 and V2 trims exclusively feature the 204hp hybrid option, whereas the VZ1 and VZ2 trims come with the more powerful 245hp hybrid option. It's worth noting that the Formentor line-up does not include an all-electric variant. Instead, Cupra's all-electric offering is represented by the Cupra Born

The plugin hybrid SUV  is fitted with a lithium battery. It has a maximum charging rate of 3.6 kilowatts, making for a full 0-100% charge time of 3.5 hours. This charge time is competitive compared to the  Audi Q3 TFSI and  the Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid, particularly considering the blend of fuel economy and power.

A key efficiency feature is the Cupra Connect, enabling users to track the car's activity through their phones. This feature becomes particularly handy during charging.

Drivers can pick from three unique driving modes: hybrid, GTE, and a pure electric option. The electric-only mode delivers up to 37 miles of clean city driving. This is impressive, especially when pitted against the sportier BMW X2, which gives 32 miles on electric power (as per startstone).

As the push for extended electric driving ranges intensifies among manufacturers, many are eager to see what the Formentor's future holds in this domain. As a point of comparison, Volkswagen's next Tiguan is rumored to achieve 62 miles in pure electric mode (as reported by fleet news).

One notable aspect of the car is its regenerative braking, which is only active in sportier settings. This choice was made to keep the classic driving feel in regular or comfort settings but leverage regenerative benefits in more spirited drives. It's a decision that certainly elevates the car's dynamic driving essence.

Performance : The Gold Standard for SUV Performance and Design

The Cupra Formentor's strongest point has to be its performance. Whether it's the handling, dynamics, driving modes, acceleration, or transmission, this vehicle excels. Performance often remains a grey area for SUVs, but the Formentor shines brilliantly in this regard.

Compared to its less sporty counterparts, the Formentor's performance is commendable. It does, however, fall slightly short when benchmarked against powerhouses like the BMW X2. For those craving more aggression, the e-hybrid 245 DSG in VZ1 and VZ2 models, with a top speed of 130 mph and a 0-62 time of just 7 seconds, might be a fitting choice. also going for the non hybrid variants the 4 drive option in VZ3 and VZ2 trim levels can be an optimal choice as it generate 310 horsepower and does the 0-62 in just 4.9 seconds.

Against peers like the Citroen and Volvo XC40, the Formentor stands out. It strikes a delicate equilibrium between comfort and athleticism, characterised by responsive and accurate steering.

While the inclusion of the battery pack and electric motor slightly shifts the vehicle's weight distribution, it doesn’t detract from the car's agility or balance on the road.

Design is another domain where the Formentor excels. Crafted with aerodynamics in mind, its bodywork minimises air drag while optimising downforce without sacrificing aesthetics. Diving into the specifics, it boasts a drag coefficient of 0.33. This signals a harmonious blend of sporty design elements and the aerodynamic demands posed by an SUV's stature. Expert Chris Marren attests:

Expert
Chris Marren, Motorfinity

“The Formentor sets a new standard, masterfully balancing performance and design. It truly is a standout in the performance SUV arena"

In terms of acceleration, the Formentor achieves 0-62 mph in 7.8 seconds, catering to the desires of a majority of its clientele. In a head-to-head with the BMW X2, it holds its ground, with the latter reaching 0-62 mph in 7.7 seconds. When compared to other Formentor variants, it surpasses the base models like the TSI DSG-Auto 150 but lags slightly behind the 245hp e-hybrid variant.

The 1.4 petrol engine, far from feeling underpowered, is impressive. The e-hybrid model churns out 330 Newton-meters of torque, offering drivers immediate throttle responses and a bolder mid-range acceleration. This makes for a more exhilarating driving experience.

Lastly, the Formentor's suspension is built for supreme handling. Fitted with the MacPherson Strut Front Suspension, popular in performance SUVs like the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape, it ensures a compact design allowing for wider tire options. This, in turn, enhances road grip and cornering prowess.

Exterior : Is Its Design the New SUV Benchmark?

The exterior design of the Cupra Formentor stands out, setting it apart in the crowded SUV segment. While its range largely maintains a consistent design, the V1 variant does lack features such as the virtual pedal and electric tailgate.

Living up to SEAT's branding, the Formentor captures the essence of a premium, sporty SUV. Its bold front logo and commanding presence make it notably unique amongst rivals. As an expert from Motorfinity puts it:

Jack Rayson Motorfinity
Jack Rayson, Motorfinity

“The Cupra Formentor challenges the idea that SUV designs have limitations. It's fierce, captivating, and a sheer visual treat."

Distinctive to the e-hybrid variant are the 'e-hybrid' badge at the rear, complemented by a striking blue stripe spanning the front grille and headlights, and blue brake calipers.

The Formentor features standard 18-inch alloy wheels, crucial to its aggressive stance. However, for those desiring a more audacious appearance, 19 or 20-inch options can be opted for. Specifically, the V1 e-hybrid variant is equipped with these 18-inch wheels, while the V2, VZ1, and VZ2 variants boast the distinctive 19-inch exclusive copper and black alloy wheels.

cupra formentor exterior

Adding to its athletic appeal are the pronounced side curves and defined wheel arches, lending the SUV a robust and powerful aura. Its rear view echoes this sportiness, with a dynamic bumper and crisp LED taillights. When searching for a similar sporty aesthetic, the Audi Q3 Sportback comes to mind, particularly due to its sloping roofline and angular headlights. But the Formentor has an edge with its grandiosity. Drawing parallels with its expansive grille and swept-back headlights, it also evokes comparisons to the Volvo XC40.

Is the Formentor the pinnacle of aggressive SUV design in the UK market? It indeed ranks among the top, but the BMW X2, with its pronounced roofline and broad air intakes, might just clinch the top spot in this aesthetic battle.

Interior: Luxury Meets Innovation

The interior of the Cupra Formentor exudes the luxury expected from a vehicle in its class.

Every model in the Cupra line-up boasts a digital cockpit and a customizable dashboard, both of which elevate the driving experience and infuse modernity into the vehicle's interior.

The centrepiece is a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen. While its expansive screen offers an upscale feel, the absence of physical buttons can be a drawback. This move towards a fully digital interface does lend the car a modern touch, but it can also make certain tasks, like disabling auto play, somewhat cumbersome.

When it comes to the seating of the Cupra Formentor, our expert says:

Oliver Bentley
Oliver Bentley, Motorfinity

“The seating experience in the Formentor doesn't disappoint. The seats strike the right balance between comfort and support, with the added luxury of the front seats being both heated and ventilated. Having reviewed countless vehicles, we can confidently say that this SUV provides a seamless blend of sportiness and comfort."

A standout feature for us is the driver seat's memory function, which can store seat and mirror positions for up to three users, a testament to the vehicle's commitment to personalization

interior cupra formentor

While the boot space is ample at 345 litres, it does fall a bit short when stacked against competitors. For comparison, the BMW X2 xDrive25e and the Volvo XC40 Recharge offer 410 and 452 litres of space, respectively. However, even if it doesn't lead the pack, the Formentor's boot space remains more than adequate for most users.

The SUV certainly offers ample legroom, ideal for both brief city drives and longer trips. Unlike many SUVs where rear legroom and head height can be restrictive, the Formentor doesn't fall short in these areas, ensuring excellent comfort for all passengers.

Does Cupra Formentor e-Hybrid have heated seats and steering wheel?

The V1 variant, as reviewed in the video, does not have heated seats. However, the V2 variant does offer heated front seats. The VZ1 variant also lacks heated seats, but the VZ2 and VZ3 variants both have them. Regarding the steering wheel, neither the V1 nor V2 trims offer a heated version. Only the VZ2 and VZ3 models come with a heated steering wheel.

Price and the Cost of Ownership

The V1 variant serves as the introductory model of the Cupra Formentor line-up, priced at £31,610, though it's available at a discounted Motorfinity price of £27,345. Opting for the V1 e-HYBRID version raises the cost to £39,220, but Motorfinity offers it for a reduced price of £35,247.

When it comes to holding its value, the Cupra Formentor impresses. Data from both Cupra and our sources indicate that after three years of ownership, the Formentor retains roughly 60% of its original value. This is notably higher than many competing high-performance SUVs. Moreover, the hybrid variants have a slight edge in resale value compared to their non-hybrid counterparts, thanks to their fuel efficiency.

From a maintenance perspective, the hybrid models demand slightly more attention than the non-hybrids, owing to their dual powertrain setup. That said, this doesn't translate to a significant cost difference. And, since Cupra Formentor is under the SEAT brand, which in turn is a subsidiary of Volkswagen, parts availability isn't an issue, helping to keep maintenance costs in check.

For those receiving a vehicle as an added benefit from their employers, the Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) tax becomes pertinent. For clarity, BIK tax is imposed on employees who enjoy perk (like company cars) beyond their regular salary. This tax amount is determined by the vehicle's CO2 emissions and its list price. In this context, the Cupra Formentor e-hybrid qualifies for a notably lower BIK tax rate of 11%, in contrast to the 32% rate for the petrol versions.

Regarding insurance, 2023 data reveals that the V1 e-hybrid is categorized in insurance group 24. However, more premium trims like the VZ1 and VZ2 e-hybrids are classified under group 26.

If we were to provide a snapshot of the total cost of ownership over a span of three years for the CUPRA Formentor V1 e-HYBRID:

  • Initial Purchase Price: £39,220
  • Insurance: approximately £1,899
  • Fuel Costs: around £682.38
  • Benefit-in-Kind tax: roughly £12,949.60
  • Factoring in Depreciation (a drop of £15,688 over three years)

The overall Total Cost of ownership comes to an estimated £39,056 over those three years.

Comparing the price of Formentor with other Cupra, SEAT and Volkswagen SUVs

Cupra Formentor lies in the premium performance SUV category. See the following comparison to see where it stacks up against the other SUVs offered by Cupra, Seat, and Volkswagen.

    Cupra vs Ateca price comparison

The Cupra Ateca offers a more aggressive stance in the SUV market. It has an on-road starting price of £34,770, positioning it slightly higher in terms of cost. Notably, the Ateca is available exclusively with petrol versions. As a result, drawing direct comparisons with a hybrid model of the Formentor may not be fully appropriate. However, when matched against the entire line of the 150 ps or 4WD Formentor model, the Ateca is marginally pricier. The 4WD Ateca is priced at £44,345 (with a Motorfinity price of £38,176), whereas the Formentor is £39,830.

Cupra Formentor vs Seat Tarraco price comparison

Another car to consider is the Seat Tarraco from Cupra's parent company, Seat. It's a relevant comparison because it also offers a 1.4-litre petrol engine in its hybrid version. The starting price for the Tarraco hybrid is £41,450, which is slightly higher.

Cupra Formentor vs VW Tiguan price Comparison

A pertinent comparison would be with the renowned VW Tiguan. Although the Tiguan is not primarily performance-oriented and tends more towards reliability and serving the family market, its R Line variant, equipped with a 1.4-litre petrol engine, stands as a close competitor. It carries a price tag of £37,445, making it a noteworthy consideration in this segment.

    The Environment Friendliness

The Cupra Formentor is environmentally friendly. It employs a hybrid system, combining electric and petrol power, which results in reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and improved fuel efficiency compared to conventional vehicles.

This vehicle epitomises CUPRA's commitment to producing eco-conscious cars, evident not only in its design but also in its choice of materials. Instead of traditionally used materials like carbon fibre, the Formentor incorporates flax and hemp. These sustainable materials not only have environmental benefits but also enhance the vehicle's performance. Additionally, cultivating these plants aids in air purification by absorbing more CO2.

In terms of the CO2 emissions, the e-hybrid 204 variant shines with the CO2 emissions of just 27 g/km, while the 245 e-HYBRID registers just a mere 33 g/km of CO2 emissions. In comparison, the BMW X2 and Tiguan R Line both report CO2 emissions of 38 g/km. This places both e-Hybrid versions of the Formentor ahead in the environmental stakes.

Furthermore, the Formentor incorporates recycled plastics and innovative fabrics in its construction. Its design philosophy encompasses its entire lifecycle, from production to on-road performance, underscoring its eco-friendly stance. Impressively, the vehicle emits a mere 33 grams of CO2 for every kilometre it covers, which is a positive indicator for environmental sustainability.

Check our blog to learn more about how Cupra implements environmentally friendly practices throughout their supply chain and what makes them stand out when measuring the 'well-to-wheel' concept.

    Safety

The eHybrid Cupra Formentor doesn't skimp on safety. In both V1 and V2 models, it features the Safety and Driving Pack M with Dynamic Road sign display and High Beam Assist. Opt for the VZ1 and you get the Safety and Driving Pack L, adding Side Assist, Exit Assist, and Lane Change Assist. Meanwhile, the VZ2 and VZ3 models boast the exhaustive Safety and Driving Pack XL, including all previous features plus Emergency Assist for semi-autonomous control during emergencies. In short, the Formentor makes sure safety is paramount in every journey.

Further bolstering its safety credentials, the eHYBRID versions have clinched a 5-star rating in the Euro NCAP tests. This accolade attests to the SUV's elite safety provisions and exemplary crash-test results across a variety of scenarios, such as front and side impacts, as well as pedestrian safety. So, potential buyers can rest easy knowing they're investing in one of the safest vehicles in its category.

    Warranty and Services

All new CUPRA Formentors in the UK come with a standard three-year/60,000-mile warranty. This covers most mechanical and electrical component failures due to manufacturing defects. If desired, this can be extended to four years/75,000 miles or even five years/90,000 miles at the time of ordering a new CUPRA. Specifically for the plug-in hybrid variant, the battery benefits from a warranty against defects for eight years or up to 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Any further warranty can be sought from authorized CUPRA retailers, provided the car's mileage hasn’t exceeded 60,000 and its maintained according to the manufacturer's guidelines

Comparing with the other plugin hybrids in the market the warranty is standard as all other manufacturers offer almost similar warranties for their sets of vehicles.

    Towing Capacity

When it comes to towing, the e-HYBRID variant doesn't compromise, offering a robust 750 kg towing capacity without brakes and up to 1700 kg when brakes are engaged on an 8% gradient. This prowess ensures that, whether you're heading out for a weekend adventure or undertaking daily chores, the Formentor e-HYBRID stands as a testament to CUPRA's commitment to blending power, efficiency, and utility seamlessly.

    The Final Verdict

We highly recommend the Cupra Formentor V1 hybrid for those searching for a high-performance SUV with an aggressive design and an exceptional driving experience.

Though There are more affordable options than the SUV, especially compared to entry-level plug-in hybrid SUVs. However, when set against other high-performance SUVs, it offers competitive performance and is more budget friendly. While the V1 204 HS hybrid might not meet all performance expectations, the VZ1 and VZ2 variants bridge that gap impressively.

The interior and exterior are truly standout features. Visually, this SUV is stunning, a characteristic often not emphasized enough in other SUVs. Its aggressive design firmly establishes it as one of the best sporty SUVs on the market.

In conclusion, the Cupra Formentor should be on your shortlist if you're seeking a visually striking SUV that offers a fulfilling driving experience and truly stands out as an all-rounder.
