About the VW ID5

The Volkswagen ID.5 is an electric coupe SUV that came out in 2022. It got an update in 2024. It's part of Volkswagen's ID electric car range.

The ID.5 was one of the first electric coupe SUVs. It competes with cars like the Skoda Enyaq Coupe and Tesla Model Y.

Unlike other brands, the ID.5 isn't just a sleeker version of another SUV. It's its model, sitting above the ID.4. It's aimed at people who care a lot about style.

The 2024 ID.4?

The 2024 ID.5 is an updated version of the 2022 model. It has a better engine, first used in the VW ID.7.

The basic model now has a 282 bhp rear-wheel drive engine. The top GTX model has an even stronger 335 bhp engine.

To keep up with other cars and ease worries about running out of power, the new ID.5 can go further on one charge. The standard ID.5 can now travel up to 342 miles, while the all-wheel drive GTX can go 328 miles.

Other small changes include better screens and faster charging. The GTX can now charge at 175kW, which is quicker than before.

They've also made the choices simpler. The "Match" is now the basic version, and the GTX is still the sporty one.

The Comparison with the ID4?

To put into place, the ID.5 is the more stylish and Coupe-like variant of the ID4 SUV. The ID.5 also offers a slightly better performance (up to 255bhp) than the ID.4, appealing to style-conscious buyers. However, it sacrifices some rear headroom and comes at a higher price.

The ID.4, on the other hand, is all about practicality. It offers more space and a lower entry price, making it a sensible choice for those who prioritise functionality over style. Its traditional SUV styling is a testament to its reliability and practicality, giving you the confidence that it can handle your everyday needs.

Also, in terms of range, the ID.5 is marginally better (up to 342 miles vs. 325 miles WLTP).

The Range

For the 2024 facelift model, the ID.5 has an official WLTP range of up to 342 miles (for the 2024 facelift model).

The ID.5 offers a consistent range across most of its variants, thanks to its large 77kWh battery pack. The base Pro model and the Pro Performance both claim a range of 327 miles, which is competitive in its class. This range surpasses the base Ford Mustang Mach-E (273 miles) and is comparable to the Kia EV6.

How Good is the Charging?

The new 2024 ID.5 can travel up to 342 miles on one charge, the official number from the WLTP test.

Most versions of the ID.5 can go about the same distance. This is because they all use the same big 77kWh battery.

The basic Pro model and the Pro Performance say they can go 327 miles; this is good compared to similar cars.

For example, it can go further than the basic Ford Mustang Mach-E, which only goes 273 miles. It's about the same as the Kia EV6.

The Home Charging Situation?

The ID.5's home charging is quite good. With a 7kW wall box, you can fully charge it in about 12 hours, perfect for overnight charging. Overall, the ID.5 offers a good electric range and charging options to suit different needs. It charges quickly at public stations and comes with tax benefits. These features make the ID.5 a practical electric car for many people and uses.

The Interior

The Overall Design and the Layout?

The ID.5's inside looks simple but modern. It feels both plain and fancy. The dashboard is neat, with a big screen that floats in the middle.

Depending on your chosen model, this screen can be 10 or 12 inches wide. A small screen behind the steering wheel shows important driving info. This screen moves with the steering wheel, so you can always see it well.

The middle part between the seats is simple and raised. The steering wheel looks modern and has buttons you need to touch.

The inside of the car uses different materials. The top parts feel soft, some bits are shiny black, and the lower parts are more rigid plastic.

Has Space Been Utilised Well in the ID.5?

Short answer: Yes!

The coupe line roofline does not mean compact space; it provides enough head and legroom for the occupants.

The front seats are designed to provide not just space, but also comfort for adults, making long drives a relaxing experience.

The rear seats can comfortably accommodate adult passengers, with reasonable knee room even when the seats are slid forward.

The headroom for a coupe is adequate. It is not as practical as an ID.4, which is an SUV, though it surely does not disappoint for a coupe.

How's the Interior Storage for Families?

The ID.5 has ample storage space. There are large door bins for additional storage.

Our experts tested it; they can hold water bottles, books, or even larger items like umbrellas.

The centre console with cup holders and a closable cubby is a thoughtful addition. The closable feature adds an extra layer of security and ensures a tidy interior, making you feel secure and organised on the go.

Overall, the ID.5 makes the interior practical and user-friendly, complementing the vehicle's overall design philosophy of blending style with functionality.

The Material Quality

The ID.5's inside is better made than other electric VWs, like the ID.3. It uses a mix of different materials.

Some parts feel soft when you touch them, while others are more rigid plastic. The seats are covered in various materials depending on which model you buy.

The basic 'Match' model covers the seats in something called "Artvelours". This unique fake material feels very soft, like suede or velvet. It's high quality and made to last, even though it's not genuine leather.

The Overall Visibility?

For a coupe, forward visibility is ideal. The design overall makes it ideal to judge where the front end of the vehicle is, especially when manoeuvring in tight spaces.

The vehicle performs exceptionally well in managing blind spots, which is unusual and impressive for a coupe-style SUV.

The vehicle's overall design incorporates oversized side windows or cleverly shaped pillars to maximise the driver's field of view.

It's important to note the advantage of the LED matrix headlights in this vehicle. They significantly contribute to excellent visibility, providing drivers with a commanding view of the road.

The Technology Features?

The ID.5 is full of modern tech, just as expected in a fancy electric car. It has a small screen behind the steering wheel that moves when you adjust it.

This is special - even premier cars like Mercedes don't have this. You can talk to the vehicle to control things, and it understands you well (if no one understands you ID.5 will).

This works as well as the system in Mercedes cars. The fancier models (Style and GTX) have a really cool air conditioning system.

It has three zones, so the driver, front passenger, and back seat passengers can all set their temperature. This means everyone can be comfy, whether warm or cool.

Volkswagen ID.5 interior FAQs

The boot space is 549 litres with the seats up, 1,561-1,734 litres with the seats down. This indicates a spacious cargo area, especially with the rear seats folded down.

Three interior colour options are available: black, a classic choice that provides a sleek and sophisticated look; grey, with black accents; and grey interior, which offers a contemporary atmosphere. The ID.5 higher-end model also offers a beige interior colour, which provides a warmer and more inviting feel; a beige interior is a popular option.

The Exterior Design Features - Best in the Class?

Best Among the Coupes?

The ID.5 looks good and is well-designed for an electric coupe SUV. Its outside is a nice mix of style, modern looks, and practicality. When you compare it to other similar cars, it stands out.

The Skoda Enyaq Coupe looks a bit like the ID.5, with a sloping roof, but the ID.5 looks sleeker overall.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E looks more aggressive, with a long bonnet and muscular shape to make it look more like a sports car.

Even though the ID.5 has a coupe style, it's still practical to use daily. This is only sometimes true for coupe cars, which can sometimes be less valuable because of their appearance.

The Headlights of the ID.5?

The ID.5 is a bit posh, and it has very clever headlights called IQ Light LED matrix. These are some of the best headlights you can get.

They can dip and dim on their own, which means they don't blind other drivers. This is good for the person driving the ID.5, but it's also nice for everyone else on the road.

These headlights are really bright and clear, and they can change how they light up the road to help the driver see better. They also last a long time.

The ID.5's headlights are some of the best in cars like this, and you don't need to change them to make them better.

" Its coupe-like roofline gives it a sportier edge over the ID.4, appealing to style-conscious buyers. The smooth, aerodynamic silhouette not only looks great but also enhances efficiency."

Are There Any Drawbacks in the Exterior?

We have evaluated the vehicle's exterior based on various criteria and found no drawbacks.

The exterior's practicality  can be a concern for some if we compare it with SUVs like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, though in the Coupe SUV segment, if you are after more sleekness without compromising on important factors like visibility, aerodynamics, headlights, etc., then the vehicle is one of the best in the segment.

The Wheel Options of the ID.5?

The ID.5 has alloy wheel sizes ranging from 19 to 21 inches based on the trim levels. The Match Variant comes with a 19-inch alloy wheel as standard, and the high-end variants Style and GTX come with both 20-inch and 21-inch alloy wheels options.

The wheel sizes offered are pretty standard for this class of electric SUV, similar to what you might find on competitors like the Ford Mustang Mach-E or Skoda Enyaq Coupe.

It is Just the Looks or Is it Aerodynamic?

The ID.5 excels when it comes to aerodynamics. Even when compared with its predecessor like the ID.4 the vehicle is overall efficient than the boxier ID.4 SUV - one of the contributing factor has to be its ID.5 coupe like design which is described as more aerodynamically efficient than the boxier ID.4 SUV.

Comparing with the competitor like Skoda Enyaq , the vehicle has a similar coupe-SUV design philosophy. Though being more sleeker as compared to Enyaq the ID.5 is a tad bit more aerodynamically efficient.

"The ID.5's stylish wheels and streamlined shape aren't just for looks. They enhance aerodynamics, boosting efficiency and range. It's smart design that performs as good as it looks."

The Driving and Performance

Is Drive Quality Worth the Price?

The ID.5 is good to drive for its price. It can go far on one charge (328-342 miles), depending on which model you pick. It drives well, especially the sporty GTX version.

The car handles corners nicely and grips the road well. It's very quiet when driving slowly. It also comes with lots of good equipment as standard.

Whether it's worth the money depends on what you want. If you like the Volkswagen brand, how the car looks, how comfy it is to drive, and all the features it has, then the ID.5 could be a great choice for you.

Driving Comparison with Predecessors and Competitors?

The ID.5 drives a lot like the ID.4, but even better. It handles corners really well, better than the ID.4 and many other similar cars like the Ford Mustang Mach-E or Tesla Model Y.

This makes it fun to drive on twisty roads. The basic versions are quick, and the sporty GTX is even quicker.

The big 19-inch wheels make the ride comfy. The ID.5 is great for everyday driving because it speeds up quickly and smoothly. It's also very quiet, especially when driving slowly, which makes it feel posh.

When you take your foot off the accelerator, the car slows down to charge the battery, but it does this more gently than some other electric cars. This makes it easier to drive smoothly.

The Driving Modes and Their impact?

The ID.5 is very modern and high-tech. You change driving modes using the touchscreen, not buttons. This is good if you like tech, but it might be unpleasant if you're used to old-style cars.

There are three main modes: Eco, Comfort, and Sport. Eco saves power by making the vehicle less powerful. Comfort is the normal mode, suitable for everyday driving. It balances power and saves energy.

Sport mode makes the car more powerful and fun to drive. It changes how the steering and suspension work to make the car feel sportier.

Whether you like controlling everything from the screen depends on what you're used to and what you prefer.

driving mode interior screen

ID.5 GTX Drive Mode Differences?

The GTX has various driving modes, including Eco, Comfort, Sport, Traction and Individual.

The main difference in the sport mode is the rear wheel difference; the rear wheel does a lot more than in traction mode. The traction mode is a permanent 4*4 until 30km (drive smoother when you drive on the sand.

Space and Practicality

The ID.5 offers excellent upfront and fair space in the rear, easily accommodating four large adults. Being a coupe, it is impressive and comparable to many electric SUVs.

The ID. 5's boot boasts a 549-litre capacity, which is actually larger than its boxier sibling, the ID.4. This practical feature sets it apart from some other electric vehicles, like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, which lack a front trunk (frunk).

As discussed in the interior section, the vehicle's sloping roofline does not compromise visibility, as in the case with many coupes. The car has a 360-degree rear-view camera to enhance visibility further. (Our experts evaluated them and found them quite efficient and effective.)

"Despite its sleek coupe-like design, the ID.5 doesn't compromise on space. It offers a surprisingly roomy interior and even boasts a larger boot than its ID.4 sibling."

The Safety of the Vehicle?

The vehicle has a five-star Euro NCAP rating and comes with numerous advanced driver aids. It scored particularly well in adult occupant tests and the safety assist category.

The vehicle's safety performance is imposing with a 93% adult occupant score, 89% child occupant score, 76% vulnerable road user score, and 85% safety assist score.

The advanced driver assistance system, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, autonomous emergency braking, and a driver fatigue alert system, makes the vehicle well-equipped regarding safety.

How Practical is it for Families?

The Volkswagen ID.5 is reasonably practical for families. It has plenty of space inside, easily fitting four adults, so it's roomy enough for parents and kids.

The boot is big, too, with 549 litres of space, great for storing prams, shopping, or luggage for family trips. There are three Isofix points for safely attaching child seats - one in the front and two in the back.

This makes it easy to secure young children. The car also got top test safety marks, reassuring for parents.

It has lots of safety features like adaptive cruise control and emergency braking. While the sloping roof might make it tighter in the back compared to a regular SUV, it shouldn't be a problem for most families.

"Don't let the sleek design fool you. The ID.5 is surprisingly spacious inside and even has a bigger boot than the ID.4. It's stylish without sacrificing practicality."

The Resale and Depreciation Value

Electric cars used to lose value faster than petrol or diesel cars, but this is changing, which is good news for the VW ID.5.

Our information shows that the ID.5 keeps about 55% to 60% of its original price after 2-3 years. The ID.5 is still relatively new, coming out in 2022, so we can only partially determine how well it will keep its value over a long time. However, there are promising signs: Volkswagen is a brand people know and trust, the ID.5's battery should last a long time and work well for years, and more and more people want to buy electric cars now.

The ID.5 does not lose value as quickly as other cars. If you decide to sell it in the future, you might get a reasonable price.

The Insurance Cost

VW ID.5 falls into the insurance group 35 to 40, depending on the trim level. The cost of insurance is comparable to that of the competitors.
